So today I registered myself for this test called the ACT (with the written part).  Anyway, I've never taken it before and was wondering if I should study for it.  Ususally I don't really give a crap about studying for any test, but since I actually have to pay to take this test, I'm starting to wonder.  My friend who is about as smart as I am, we have the same level classes and same grades, didn't study for it at all and got a 33 on it.  But then again, he's almost two years younger than me and is in the same grade as me.  So, I'm aiming on matching his score or higher, but I'm not too sure if this test really requires me to study for it.  Any suggestions from people who have already taken it would be much appreciated, thank you.

Go ahead and study. I didn't bother studying and ended up with a 18 or 17 I think. Oh well

Well if you are planning on going to college, the ACT is a pretty important test (along with SAT for some). 36 is a perfect score, and very few get in the 34-36 range. The good thing is, if you do poorly, you can retake a couple of times.

Well, it's up to you.  The ACT covers a few different things, so you may want to only review in the areas that you may be more weak in, or just a bit curious about.

Your best bet is to look up sample problems online and see how you do.  You can also find sample tests if you get a book (from the library or you buy one), I think (at least they have them for the SATs).  So that might give you an idea of what you want.

Ultimately, it's better safe than sorry... you have to pay, and it can be a large deciding factor on whether or not a school will accept you, so it's your choice.  Studying won't make you do worse, it can only make you do better...
