My roommate, who's going into nursing was telling me that if you have even one seizure, that they will take away your driver's license for 6 months (maybe it varies by location).

But... she wasn't sure if there was a difference if you were to have a focal seizure (a seizure that doesn't include loss of consciousness).

Basically... if anyone knows or has experience with it, do you know what the actual laws on this matter is? (I'll probably look it up later, but I'm too tired at the moment).

I think I heard of this. Your license is suspended for a while depending on the state if you have seizures.

btw I planned to go into nursing to.

Did you happen to hear about something that would be a focal seizure or something like a myoclonic seizure?  It's more like a twitch...

I mean, is it just a yes or no matter, or can you contest the case...?  I'm really just curious... :).

Most likely. As long as the DMV don't find out.

This is not about what is right or fair for the driver but what is safe for the others on the road.

Of course.  But a focal seizure doesn't cause you to lose consciousness.

I'm sure it can range in severity and someone with a grand mal seizure definitely couldn't drive... but if my twitches happen to be seizures, then it doesn't affect my driving.  Even during one, I'm still capable of holding the wheel with one hand and driving the car.  Not to mention that they will only happen if I have the window open at certain times... so if I drive with my window closed, then it won't happen.

Of course, I have no idea whether I have focal or myoclonic seizures (they're probably just twitches), it's just something that makes me curious.  But to have a driver's license taken away for something that doesn't occur or doesn't limit my driving?  That's why I was wondering if they considered special cases and not just classified it immediately.

I don't know anyone with focal or myoclonic seizures to know the range in severity it can take...

Any distraction affects your driving and I would think something like a seizure would be at the top of the list.  Cell phones, kids jumping around in a car, loud noises, people on bikes, dogs running in the road....all of these things have an effect on your driving but I doubt that would come close to the effects of a seizure.  I would think that you would prioritize the safety of people first and the inconvenience factor second.  You need to discuss it with your physician.

Search "driving and seizures" in Google.  Lots of hits!
