OMG there ARE people on this site who are nice to each other.  Fabulous.  Granted tough love helps every now and again, but I hate non-cutters and former cutters who say cutting is stupid to our faces (or our monitors).  And good point about the putting down of suicidal people...very good point.  Halelujah!

Good points except that I'd say being stern is needed. If someone needs to be told to toughen the fuck up, then that's what they need to be told(along with the heart-felt advice of course) , but nonetheless.

I know, ilocin. It's difficult, because even though I know as well as you do that there are people who really do need to toughen up and, well, just suck it, we don't want to be responsible for something that might push them over the edge. It's not up to us to decide whether or not they are just being silly or looking for attention or would really kill themselves. Tough love, if it's used, needs to be used carefully - saying straight out "toughen the fuck up" or similar can't be acceptable. That isn't to say we need to sugarcoat, but there's a fine line and we need to take care with what we say.
