It seems to me that a lot of people have a big problem separating a "pedophile" from a "child molester." A teenage friend of mine was just banned from a 13+ site when the administration found out he admitted to being a pedophile somewhere, even though he said he found the idea of harming a child to be repulsive in the same breath.

There are a lot of potentially harmful fetishes and philias people by-and-large will tolerate, like sadism and non-consensual sex. This does not exist in Japan where I grew up--is the problem with pedophiles who don't own child pornography or chase kids something unique to the United States? And how did this come about? Even outright violence can seemingly be sexualized here without too much of a reaction from people.

No, pedophilia isn't an act, it is a philia. What you're talking about is child molestation--and there is a "close-in-age" clause in most states for people who are only a few years apart.

no there's a grace period of about 2 years.
also age of consent varies by state

People generally aren't keen on their children being touched by older men and women, and they never will be. Regardless of how things worked in your previous country, or back in the day.

Other fetishes get bad looks too, it's not just pedophilia. There are fetishes that are considered just that, fetishes, and fetishes that are considered to be sexual disorders that should be looked at as dangerous. Many times, that can be spot on.
