you are the only dumb one, just because you live here doesn't mean you have to hold American citizenship!

No, in the start of the second "paragraph," I'm stating the exception. I'm talking about how so many say they're not American even though they probably are.

If you move to Australia one day and live there for a while and get citizenship will you answer "yes" to "Are you Australian?"

That would be the correct answer if you have citizenship in that country.

But it doesnt make me "Australian", it just makes me an Australian citizen.

the point is that American is a citizenship not ethnicity, unless you are American Indian/Native American (damn Christopher Columbus!)

Right, but this issue is referring to your nationality, not your ethnicity or upbringing, etc. If you were to move from the US and gain Australian citizenship, thus forfeiting your American citizenship, you are Australian. You may still have American ways and what not, but the correct answer is "Australian."

American is an ethnicity when you're Native American. If you're white or whatever else, you are that-American (ex: Italian-American, Japanese-American, African-American). That's ethnicity which is completely unrelated to citizenship and nationality.

I'm not sure if this is going anywhere worthy of my time but you do know that by gaining citizenship of another country, you don't actually forfeit the citizenship of your former country.

It's a little different in other countries because the US is a country of immigrants, unless you're Native American. If you're Swedish and live in Sweden, that means your ethnicity is also Swedish. If you moved to Australia and got citizenship there, you'd be Australian in terms of nationality and citizenship, but Swedish in terms of ethnicity. So you'd be Swedish-Australian.

It makes it so much easier if you just say "I'm swedish, but i live in America" :/
