this all started when SLs were given the ability to remove posts/move topics etc.

considering how long eHelp and SLs as a whole have been around, this is too much of a coincidence to ignore.

no. the support forum separation is a horrible idea.

one, we already have a serious forum and it gets shit replies, not just because replies can only added by support leaders but because it separates the support from the community. we already have a separate section for support forums (TDR, TA&SA, TSex) and it's at the top of the page. like i said before, making a separate page (albeit the last tab) for support forums takes support out of the community, literally and figuratively and is not healthy for this site.

two, the SL "moderating" watching would take way too long and is not worth it. why do we need to watch SLs do shit? do you think most SLs watch their novices? fuck no. a quota for eHelps has been proposed before and i think that's the most logical and objective solution. anything else will take too much effort and detract from time spent giving support.

three, i disagree with the no points for dt&rm and i don't know if we should split it. i don't know if having a spam forum would be bad (would it take up too much bandwidth?). if it wouldn't, then i'd be all for it as i think that half the people that post in dt&rm want random conversation and the others think it's for spam.

just so you all know, it's not just the members that are thinking about these issues and trying to come up with solutions - the mod team has been putting a lot of thought into all of this, too.

a dtrm forum with no points is pretty much going to encourage people to post spammy shit in the support forums, i can't see what good that would do.

1) We'd need a lot more mods. There are a lot of SLs, and the current team would not be ale to keep up on top of everything. And with precious few acceptable applications, I don't see where this is coming from..

I'm not saying that mods don't do a lot, because I really don't know. But it's something like 4-5 SLs per mod. You click on the statistics maybe once a week and check and send a message.

But I still disagree with the idea.

Members seem to be torn on your suggestions. Personally I'm not overly convinced by any of them.

1. With the first suggestion I'm a little in the middle with it. I mean, yeah it may help keep the forums tidier and it would possibly help direct those members wanting it to the more helpful side of livewire, but what effect would this really have on the current state of livewire's support system. I don't really think that it would do any good or bad. Yeah, it would be alright if it happened, but it's not needed. Plus i think that there would be very few forums left in the 'Teen section'.

2. I do agree that there needs to be some improvement and some eye kept on how active the SLs are. There is a huge majority of members who do apply for the badge, i agree and that needs to be fixed. Perhaps there should be some kind of target set for SLs each week and if the target is not met on a regular basis then action be taken. I kind of like the idea of SLs being watched closely by mods. It does anger me when very few SLs are active within the Serious Forum and the eHelp center. It used to be that in the top supportive members table that members in the top three had a number of 20+ eHelps answered in a week and just lately people are struggling to answer more than 10. Which I think it horrific.

There is an alarming amount of eHelps coming in lately and i do agree that whether some are emergencies is questionable and that needs to be dealt with as well.

3. The third option is horrific. I couldn't ever see that being a solution to the lack of support or the increase in spam. The thought of having a designated spam forum is awful. It would only encourage those to create more spam topics and thats exactly what we are trying to clear up on. Having a spam forums suggests that we are accepting that kind of behaviour as long as it is in the correct place. On this website there is no place for spam.

--------------------------------

I never thought I'd say it but i agree with prisoner of hss when he says that members should be able to decide which forum topics appear in the fresh topics bar. I believe that this could possibly cut down the pointless replies by a small percentage.

I think that we should have a maximum of fifty support leaders on the site, and that the position should be fluid and constantly changing. That is to say it's hard to get hired and easy to get fired. Being fired just means you have to keep supporting to get rehired again.

Many members would hate this because they like having the SL title and the ability to delete posts and move topics but I could care less really, it'd make the position competitive and actually worth something rather than just a standard title to prove that you're a senior member on the site that is incredibly easy to get.

If we only had fifty support leaders and they knew that they could be replaced by a better supportive member at any time, I bet the site would have a lot better peer support from support leaders and non support leaders, which is a much better goal than to just try and fix support leaders.

Also, we definitely need to take away support leader post deletion powers as the current application process to be a support leader is way too fucking easy and it has no litmus whatsoever to determine ability to moderate the website in any function let alone content removal. Making ten supportive posts and writing a nice little two paragraph app essay doesn't qualify anyone to remove content from the site and censor members.

These may be unpopular opinions, but I am one to look into correct measure rather than popular measure.

By the way Wmudude, bitter much? Thanks for your input though! :D

Change 1:

I really like this idea. I have thought of something similar to this awhile ago, even suggested it to David. But this is more of a refined idea of that, which I really like. It would also help boost the Tech and College forum.

I don't really get why it has to be split up in that manner. It took me over a year to even realize that there was a College and a Tech forum. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought that as well. It would be great if there was some way to show that they do indeed exist.

I didn't see that coming and, naturally, I burst out laughing when I read it. The layout of the site really isn't that recondite, it's not complex; it's pretty fucking simple, actually.

A year of posting and activity and you finally realize where all those topics about 'how do you fix a cell phone that's fallen into a toilet, please?' topics run off to? I see maybe ten posts a day saying, 'I don't know the answer to your question, but maybe if you posted this technology question in the technology forums they would be able to help you.' I just wish I had seen your face when you realized there wasn't just forums for teenagers and probably noticed how stupid you're capable of being without much attempt.

Jesus, that's actually fucking ridiculous.

SORT OF LIKE, UH, BUTTONS?

This one refers to the TEENAGER portion of the forums.
This one, however, is different; it's geared toward the COLLEGE-LEVEL students!
THIS FORUM IS FOR TECHNOLOGY. HENCE THE ABBREVIATION, USING ONLY THE FIRST FOUR LETTERS AND DROPPING THE OTHER SIX.

TOGETHER, THEY FORM TO CREATE A BUTTON PANEL VIEWABLE AT THE TOP-LEFT CORNER OF EVERY PAGE ON LIVEWIRE.

For your assistance (or any members that are (in any way) similar to dreamweaver):

That's another similar idea to mine as well.
This Bushism-esque introductory sentence is another example of something that made me /facepalm.

Of course you'd support an idea that actively ensures that you guys stay in the absolute power position while those below you are being changed based on rotation and not necessarily on merit. It seems perfectly fitting, really, almost entirely predictable.

uh, i'm not even a support leader anymore, kiddo.

you still haven't addressed my point, though, which sort of confirms the idea that the only thing that you care about is to maintain the level of control they already have on this, your favourite teen 'support' angstpit community.

if the support leaders have to rotate, so be it, as long as it's not you, right?

Quit oversimplifying shit to be an ass, you should know that I could care less about that kind of shit, Circa.

Support Leaders have the function of peer support, they're failing miserably and most of them are worthless as support leaders. We don't even have fifty outstanding support leaders right at this very moment. The only reason people are applying for it is the status thingy and the ability to remove posts and move topics, and that's obviously not the reason support leader was invented.

Naturally, you'll make wild accusations as to the motives that I/we have, but your theory of power grabbing conspiracy, at least here is basically retarded. We can't rotate mods like that because moderation promotions are not based on peer support. I honestly wouldn't care if mods were rotated and it were competitive and hard to remain a mod, were it needed, like it is with the support leaders.

Maybe you don't care that much, sure, but I've no doubts that katyfuck made sure it didn't say anything about moderators having a 'time limit' or some other bullshit rule that ensures a rotation within the modteam before she agreed with you.

Funnily enough, the administrator promoted the best support leader the site has had, and since then he's done fucking nothing in terms of support.

Again, what I'm saying has nothing to do with you as an individual. Most of the moderators don't want to be rotated because it would mean they lose the 'power' they've got. It should be hard to retain the status, because honestly, moderators can go months without even logging in before davjs does fucking anything about it. That's probably the stupidest thing about it; it's the highest position any member can get to and yet once they're there, they're there until they choose to not be there anymore.

Or they pull a mapleafan.

Circa- would you rather for me to lie about it? I wasn't exactly the most active my first year on here and was just getting used to LiveWire, period. And you're also forgetting one thing that you should also have to slap yourself again over... I was on here 3 years before you and LiveWire was slightly different then.

To me this was what the main page of LiveWire looked like:
http://web.archive.org/web/20040604200204/http://www.goteenforums.com/

Compared to front page NOW:
http://golivewire.com/

As I'm going to repeat this once more... I did not get on very much at all and was rather very new to forums. David did make it more known that there are those two forums towards new members, BUT I still think we should do more than just a few little things.

Circa- instead of arguing with who's an idiot and who's the smart one or whatever you're trying to prove, why don't you put all this effort and switch course. Switch it something that would actually be worth something and will get you somewhere, instead of being known as a pain in my ass.

when the fuck did moderator rotation ever have anything to do with peer support? do you actually know what this topic is about at all or are you doing your usual jumping on the anti-moderator bandwagon?
