Passing out is involuntary, it's usually caused by a drop in blood pressure, lack of oxygen/blood to the brain and low blood sugar, this may only last for a few minutes. Sleeping is usually voluntary and it's when your body and mind is exhausted and needs rest to "re energize" (unlike going unconscious). A person can be woken quite easily and sleep lasts alot longer than a few minutes, your body normally wakes up naturally after 8-12 hours sleep.
