My mom is a CNA.

Sweetie, you're thinking of "RN". She doesn't want to be a nurse she wants to be a resident assistant.

I don't know how different an RA is to a Don in Canada, but from my perspective this is how I see it.

Don's get free living (free water, electricity, room, cable) but have to pay for their own meal plan. They have to do floor meetings (make sure everyone is doing well, discuss any issues/problems on the floor, make announcements) and activities (pretty much anything, movie night, bowling, whatever).

If you live off campus you'll be paying $460+ a month (Canadian) for rent and utilities, then there is food on top of that. You don't have any responsibilities of first year students (no meetings/activities/etc).

So it really depends on if you want to be a mentor to first year students, how much money you have, and if you would prefer to live with some friends or in a residence with first years.

hEY YO, I'm an RA. Its good and bad and requires a fair bit of committment. By far the biggest issue is being continuously friendly to everyone! I see that RA"s always have a smile and can always make residents feel happy. Unfortunately we have to be careful not to be the RA Counselling service as this is so draining. Yes the job can be drainign, it is also really difficult to apply the rules equally and tell off your friends. Some of the good things are when at the end of the year the residents come and shake your hand, give you a hug etc and tell you that YOU'RE the reason they've made it through uni. Or its really good to know that you've helped a drunken resident from injuring themselves (I recall many trips to the hospital), fixed a broken friendship (RA intervention works a treat) etc.
