This was very helpful because my friend has an eating disorder but it didn't fall into Anorexia or Bulimia. I found out what it was. This was very helpful.

I know a fair few people who say things like 'I'm ugly' or refuse to accept compliments about their appearence. The thing is, just about everyone I know (alright, possible exaggeration) has done it at some point. So, is is just a thing most people go through, or is it an underdeveloped form of BDD?

You can have chest pain, but it doesn't mean that you have an "underdeveloped form" of a heart condition. In the same sense (and yes, I know this is a weak analogy), you can have symptoms of BDD and be perfectly healthy. In fact, the vast majority of people refuse compliments and feel badly about their appearance at times. People with BDD are OBSESSED with one or more "defects" they believe they possess. For example, someone with BDD could be really upset with their nose. Lots of people don't like their noses, but someone with BDD will become obsessed with it. They'll spend hours each day thinking about it, they'll avoid leaving the house, they'll cover their face when they're close to people. In many cases, the sufferer will contemplate things like self-surgery and suicide because they are convinced that their life is doomed unless they can fix this flaw. And of course, in most cases, nobody would even notice anything wrong about the feature causing so much agony in the patient.

There's a natural self-consciousness in everyone, but when it takes over your life, it's a problem.

Nevertheless...I believe all eating disorders are ridiculous.

I think this kind of "disease" roots from the modern culture more than anything.

How many people had eating disorders when TV and Radio wasn't present?

How many people have eating disorders in less developed nations?

Not very many!

Im sorry im not trying to be rude or anything, but your statement was very uninformed.  It may not be proven but quite a few people i know did not develop anorexia or any other eating disorder because of people on tvs or models or whatnot.  I know that some people starve themselves because they want to become a model or whatever but normal people dont just look at models or celebritys on tv and just decide to not eat.  There is a lot more to it than that, although i will admit that those things have an influence its not the cause.  And another instance of anorexia in history was during the victorian era, it was when the first actualy case study was done i believe.

I agree. Normal people just don't just look at models and decide to stop eating. An eating disorder is more to than just looking like a model. Sometimes depression has to do with it.
