I just transfered to a four-year university from a community college and am a junior. I live in the dorms because I thought I would meet more people that way but no one on my floor keeps their doors open and they barely, if at all, acknowledge each other in the hall, even if you do smile and say hi. My roommate is a freshman, which makes hanging out kind of ackward along with other things. I have left my boyfriend of two + years at home who I am hopelessly in love with and going crazy without. Overall, I am so unhappy here its driving me to major stress. It was always my goal to go away to school but now that I've gotten here I just want to go home. My classes aren't bad, thats not the problem at all, I'm just not happy with the environment. I tried joining a few clubs or activities but most meeting or events are on weekends, so I am unable to attend them because I have so much other stuff going on and am generally not at school on the weekends. The weekends are my escape, I get to go home, go camping, up-north, visit my bf, etc. weekends are kind of out of the question for me for the most part, they are the only time I am happy. I have a job up here which is a half hour walk away, because I don't have a car, doing the same thing I was doing at home (for much less money) and I wasn't really thrilled with it at home. I am broke for the first time in my life, like REALLY broke and barely getting by. I redefine the meaning of living paycheck to paycheck! I've never been a fan of making new friends and apparently I'm not good at it. I'm not used to staying in so much because at home there was always stuff to do and places to go, I feel like a loner and a loser up here. The whole situation is causing me so much stress that it is interfereing with my daily life and causing me to be completely unmotivated. I don't know what to do. Should I try to leave after this semester or stick it out and be miserable for the next two years. If I leave I would have to go to a crappy school back at home! I'm sorry for such a long rant but I'm seriously going nuts up here and need your advice! Thanks.

I hear you.  It sucks to have to go to a good school and leave all of your friends.  I think it would not be a bad idea to stick it out.  If you really want to be closer to your friends and family, then it would probably be best to go to a college that is closer to you, it depends on if you values your education or friends more.

If you're getting bad grades and feeling unmotivated, then the best thing for you to do would be to go home. If you're wasting your money on classes and whatnot... when you're not even going to get good grades, why do it?

Maybe see if your college offers some online courses that you could go home and take for a semester, and try and get more adjusted.

Can your boyfriend move out there with you? Could you guys find a place to stay together?

If you need someone to talk to, PM me, kay?

My grades aren't suffering, I'm just becoming unmotivated socially. Everyone I meet ends up being a freshman, anyone older seems to already have a group of friends that they aren't really looking to expand.
As for my boyfriend, he is going to school at home and the program he is in isn't offered up here by me and vice versa, the program I'm in isn't offered at home.
I just want to meet new people and get involved with the school but I'm finding it really hard. Everything I try has gone wrong or hasn't worked out so I'm stuck and these things are making me wish my life at home even more. I don't know...

i know, it's like that here. i try to be friendly to the other girls in the hall but they're like in bitch mode the entire time. get a few close group of friends and concentrate on them. that's basically what i'm doing. i have a few people i really like that i hang with on the weekends. other than that, during the week i'm busy with track and homework so the fact i don't socialize with others in the dorm doesn't really bother me cause i'm preoccupied.
