They have specially designed cars for people with leg handicaps, although if your whole body is weak you will have trouble getting the chair in/out of the car and yourself in/out of it. If that is the case, would someone be able to help you?

I can't drive yet, I was planning to get the bus everyday, and they are wheel chair equipped, but I don't know if I will be able to get down to the stop every morning? its 15 minutes away and across many busy roads.

Is anyone you know getting the same bus? There may be someone willing to help you get to the bus...

Have you spoken to the college about your possible difficulties getting there? They may be able to help you...

You may also be able to get some benefits (worth asking someone about?) which would help with getting there.

Hopefully you will find that people (at least some people...) are very accepting and will give you a hand if you need it. Try not to be afraid to ask people for help... you aren't on your own in this.

Keep in mind that this is only temporary... no matter how bad it is one day you WILL be able to walk again.

I'm sure there are other people in similar positions to the one you are in... have you asked the hospital if they run/know of any support groups (or anything similar? It may help you if you can meet someone who is going through a similar thing, or has gone through it in the past.

It's not the end of the world if this year at college doesn't go well - you can always do stuff again, it is never too late to learn and your health is more important than whether you manage college this year or not.

Honey, don't worry. I'm sure your friends and family are supportive and the thing you're going through right now will only make you stronger - you'll have the experience of hard times and after some years you can look back to it and say: I made it through. Also, you'll be fine in the end. There are many people who have no chance to get any better.
Good luck!

Being in a wheel chair isn't all that bad. You make it sound as though you're going to have no life.

I know I am probably overreacting, but its only just really hit me yesterday how weak I am, tried to get out of bed to get something, managed to pull myself out, but passed out almost straight away.

It's totally understandable! Suddenly finding yourself not able to do all the things you normally do is a big shock and it will take a while to get used to it. -hugs-

Hi, I've been in a wheelchair for 3 years. At first I found it really scary. When I went outside people would stare and treat me like I didn't have a brain, but I got used to it. Now I ignore people who stare and prove I do have a brain!

I also found it tough indoors... nothing was at my height and I couldn't do simple things anymore (like reach a top cabinet or look in the mirror!) Ask if you can have the house re-arranged a bit so you can get around it and things like mirrors put at your height (we have 3 mirrors in the bathroom so that I'm able to see in one if I'm sitting in my chair or I try to stand up. and one for people who are fully mobile.)
I'm not gonna lie, you will struggle at first, but you will get used to it in time.

Now, I'm really grateful to my wheelchair because I wouldn't be able to leave my bed if I didn't have it and it means I can do so much more with my life than I could before.
Also, it may be worth looking into getting an electric chair. I have one and it means I can go out on my own and (provided theres diabled access into places) I can do a lot of what I was doing before.

You may be able to get disability living allowance, and your college should be able to offer support (when I was at college they provided taxi's.)

I will pm you with my msn incase you want to chat further.

I'm sorry about whatevers happened to you, but you will adjust to being in a wheelchair, and I'm alway around on msn if you'd like to chat :)
